6 Bill of Rights: 8th Amendment “Excessive bail shall
not be
required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual
punishments inflicted.”!
required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual
punishments inflicted.”!
In this cartoon there are two main characters- the judge
sitting down behind the high bench and the defendant. The statement made at the bottom of the page
would be the sentence handed down by the judge as punishment for whatever the
crime was. This carton connects to the 8th amendment because the 8th
amendment states that “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive
fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” Sentencing someone
to any time inside a bathroom is most definitely cruel and unusual punishment. Well,
even if the punishment is not cruel it is at least unusual, which means that
the constitution of the U.S protects American citizens from being subjected to
this kind of punishment.
This article is mostly about the
idea that life for teenagers at New York’s Rikers Island is
unconstitutional. The article stating that the environment that teens subjected
to at Rikers is not rehabilitation, rather frequent beatings and solitary confinement.
The writer contends that the prison life at Rikers is excessive punishment for
teenagers because of the constant abuse against inmates by guards. Therefore,
this article relates to the 8th amendment because the writer
believes that the treatment against teenagers at Rikers Island is not suitable
for rehabilitation. The unsuitable environment at Rikers leads to a circle of
endless convictions rather than improving the lives of these teens.
